This may not make sense and I tend to run on but I had to get this off my chest....
I think pastors tend to do to simple sermons because they don’t want anyone to not understand but it seems to me that Jesus often preached in parables that the people wouldn’t understand. It seems that when its God’s time to open our ears he will, also I think pastors make it to easy on us. There should be a call to action after a sermon to say research this in your bible, read it, figure out what it means to you. Sermons should encourage people to pick up their bibles and learn more. Not just attend church on Sunday and be done. People need Jesus and then after that they need sermons that are going to better teach them who Jesus is, and I’m not talking the baby food stuff, yes we all know Jesus loves us but we need the meat to reach into the word and really figure out what was being said. What are the meanings of the parable, what was going on when the adulteress woman was brought before Jesus and he knelt and started writing in the dirt. What can we learn from the disciples? They were dense, I mean look at how often they had to ask Jesus the same things again and again. And I think that happens to our pastors and they get frustrated, but Jesus got frustrated too and yet he told them again. He know that they would understand someday and part of the teaching process is letting them figure it out themselves, that is how someone will truly learn. I just get frustrated when I hear sermons on something I learned back in Sunday school, even new Christians know these things, they understand the good Samaritan and to love your neighbor as yourself. What they need to hear is why is there evil in the world? How do we love others as Jesus did? How to pray and how to discern the voice of God? Not easy questions and that’s the point, the church needs to start talking about these things. We need to study the questions non-Christians have so we can try to help them understand about Jesus and the bible. We need to teach the children of the church (and our adults too) how to reach people and share the good news. Pastors need to stop with the baby food and start serving meat!
