A friend of ours started a book club for all of us book lovers. We are reading through the 25 Books Every Christian Should Read list. Being the future minded person he is, he mapped out reading the whole list with us meeting once a month, it should take about 9 years. I have been so excited to join it, I love reading and the books on the list are ones I would enjoy but need that extra push to do it. The first book we read is On The Incarnation by St. Athanasius. I have enjoyed it so much, here is a quote that has stuck with me
"Human and human minded as men were, therefore, to whichever side they looked in the sensible world they found themselves taught the truth. Were they awe-stricken by creation? They beheld it confessing Christ as Lord. Did their minds tend to regard men as Gods? The uniqueness of the Savior's works marked Him, alone of men, as Son of God. Were they drawn to evil spirits? They saw them driven out by the Lord and learned that the Word of God alone was God and that the evil spirits were not gods at all. Were they inclined to hero-worship and the cult of the dead? Then the fact that the Savior had risen from the dead showed them how false these other deities were, and that the Word of the Father is the one true Lord, the Lord even of death. For this reason was He both born and manifested as Man, for this He died and rose, in order that, eclipsing by His works all other human deeds, He might recall men from all the paths of error to know the Father. As He says Himself, 'I came to seek and to save that which was lost.'" St. Athanasius On the Incarnation
This quote hit me, and ever since reading it God keeps bringing it to mind. The first image that came to my mind was being a student in school. There are so many ways people learn but unfortunately schools usually only teach one way. If you don't learn that way, tough, you have to figure out how to understand it, it's up to you. Many struggle with this, it's the kid who you have talked to and you know they are smart, the way they creatively view the world and yet struggle to maintain a c average. The way the school system works, just doesn't work for them.
I think many of us think of the gospel in the same way. God loves us and died for us because we are sinners, all true but someone who thinks they are a good person are not going to be won over to God by this statement. But there is some aspect of who God is and His story that will. Our staff team lead a workshop recently at the Navigators National conference, we talked about each of our unique stories and also our unique brokenness.
I personally struggle with being shy, to someone who doesn't have that struggle, they in no way understand how hard it is for me to enter in to a new situation. Someone who is not shy will often tell a shy person to "suck it up", "its not so bad" and other such comments because for them, it's not a struggle. However there are things that are hard for them, maybe they hate being alone in silence. Or maybe they care so much about others opinions of them they spend an hour every day fixing their make up. I don't know what your struggle is, I can't always sympathize. But God can.
God is in control, He made the world and it's all in His hands, He did this so we can take our Sabbath rest. We can rest knowing He is still at the wheel, He is still working it all for His good. God is perfect so we don't have to be, He is working the change in us, forming us to be more in His image. He is the healer, He is the savior, He is the sacrifice, He is the conqueror of death. We can work and try all we won't but He is the one who can do all these things, He is in control. All God asks of us is to just rest in His presence. Such an easy thing and yet we fight it at every turn.
Whatever your struggle, whatever earthly thing you turn to and worship instead of God, bring it before Him because He has something so much better to fill that spot.
Recently I had wondered over my strong like for the Harry Potter books (yes I am a nerd). I would think over the stories, have read the books numerous times and every time I see the movie want to read them again. I asked myself, why do I obsess so much? What is going on here? Recently I have realized I am drawn to those stories because of the gospel message in it. No they are not written for that purpose but that doesn't mean God won't use it to reach me. This may seem silly to you or not make sense. But there are gospel themes all around us. Harry Potter is about a boy who's mother loved him so much that she sacrificed her life to save him. A boy who again and again puts his life in danger for his friends, for his community. In case you haven't read it, I don't want to give to much away but again and again in the books there is the idea of death for a friend, life after death, sacrifice, redemption because of love and so on. If you want ask me about it, I'm more then willing to talk about it.
It's not just movies, you can find the gospel in books, movies, music and in your own life stories.
I apologize if I'm rambling, I hope this makes some sense, feel free to talk to me or ask me questions. This has been a topic our staff has been talking about and I have been thinking about for awhile. God is present, He wants to reach you right where you are at. No one is outside His reach. God made us each unique individuals, there are no surprises for Him. We just need to slow down and sit in God's presence, you will be surprised what He use to teach you about Himself.
"For the Lord touched all parts of creation, and freed and undeceived them all from every deceit. As St. Paul says, 'Having put off from Himself the principalities and the powers, He triumphed on the cross,' so that no one could possibly be any longer deceived, but everywhere might find the very Word of God."

I'm too small for this
"I'm too small for this"
That's what I thought last night as I was holding my big baby boy. For some reason not that I'm too young for this. Though it does feel odd being a mom, I don't feel to young. It seems more odd that I'm getting so old. My grey hair is coming in (thanks for those genes mom) and so are the wrinkles. But it's not the age, it's the size. At his last Doctors appointment Micah was 29 inches, which means he is probably more than that by now. Which also means he is almost half my length. (5'2 = 62 inches). I'm feeling smaller every day.
The last few days Micah has had a stuffy noise and like his mama he likes to be cuddled, but also like his mama he's a bit of a wiggle worm. Nursing him felt like I was wrestling a bear, changing diapers is like hog tying a cow. Snuggling is like trying to hold an eel.... with a really hard head that often bangs into you. And in every situation there's the teeth and claws. Which has made me realize parenthood is like caring for a wild animal. You never know if its going to be nice or going to bite. You have to keep a watchful eye.
So as I attempted to snuggle Micah to get him to sleep and thought about how big he is now, as he flailed about it, made me think how much easier it was when he was little, and how much easier it could be if only I had another arm.... then as if he read my mind, in came my knight in shining armor in the form of my handsome husband in his pjs. I'm so glad I have someone to help care for the wild animal.

Fun at our house
This summer Tom and I decided to open our home on a weekly basis to all the Nav students to eat dinner, play games and watch movies. I enjoy opening our home. One of my "spiritual gifts" is hospitality. A gift I think was influenced by my mom. Growing up my mom opened our home and we had many cousins and friends that lived with us at different times. After school, we hung out at my house. The school drama party and end of the year sports parties continued to be there even after I was no longer in school. When my parents built their house, they purposely made it large with lots of rooms to be able to accommodate folks. Even now, with both my brother and I moved out, they have two college students living with them and my aunt and uncle off and on. In addition to this they have opened their home to Nav staff retreats and events. It's clear where my joy of hospitality comes from.
Sometimes I find it odd. I am an extreme introvert. I need my alone time. I use to write into my calender hours or even days where I would get away from everyone. But I have found that I have adjusted. Growing up in a home of lots of extraverts I thought I was a grumpy person. After moving out and not having others follow me from room to room and watch over my shoulder as I checked my email I realized that I and not just a grump, I was depleted and because of that, I was grumpy. I now know I need downtime (alone time) to regenerate. As long as I am careful about getting rest and downtime, I really enjoy being with people, especially having people over to our home.
I'm so glad, and realize how blessed we are that we have a home that we can invite others over too. That we can provide a meal to enjoy together. That community and fellowship can develop all the time we are having fun at our house. Pray that our home can be a safe haven for our students that need it. That real friendships grow and bless.

The World
This morning I was reading a friends blog telling of her experience over seas. She is with an organization called One Acre Fund and my cousin will soon be leading a team to the Village of Hope in Uganda. Other friends are in or recently returned from other countries all over the world. It brings me joy that their hearts burn for people. That they want to help those with physical and/or spiritual hunger. It's so exciting, I'm so glad there are people with a heart for that and that they joyfully and bravely do it. My prayers are with you dear friends.

I have an army
I have an army of prayer warriors. Friends and family who at an email, facebook message, text or call mobilize, their hearts bow in prayer to God. What an amazing thing. Tonight I sent out a prayer request to some of my prayer warriors. Earlier this year Christina graduated, got engaged and was diagnosed with stomach cancer. You can read more about her story here.
It's comforting to know that I am not alone in lifting up my friend in prayer. And within minutes of sending out a note I had friends already telling me they were in prayer. Praise God, and thank you Lord for you church (not necessarily the physical place but the group of believers seeking Him). I am encouraged, blessed, loved well by them, by you! There is power that we cannot even comprehend when we pray together. I rejoice in my friends prayers and the Holy Spirit praying on my behalf when I don't even know how. "Not as I will, but as You will."

Micah's first Easter
This year it was Micah's first Easter. What a difference a year makes! Last year I was starting to show a bit. Though if you didn't know I was pregnant you would just think I had enjoyed to many cadbury eggs. This year I have a 7 1/2 month old! Here are a few photos and highlights from the day
I always like holidays, spending time with family and good food, whats not to like? This year was no exception. We also had some friends, my nephew and his friend had a blast hunting eggs in my parents huge backyard and swimming. Some others played some basketball. And some of use just ate.... well we also were entertaining Micah, someones got to do it ;) Hope you had a great Easter and had some time to reflect on what the day is all about. He has risen and we are blessed by that daily, in more ways then we can possibly understand. Thank you Lord!

This is Micah at the end of church service, he napped for the whole thing. But between that and the cry room being pretty empty I actually got to listen to the service!
This is our friends and their sweet daughter, she is a month and one day younger than Micah.
The family
He's such a funny boy
He's a very happy boy
The eggs were a bit to big for him to grab, I held it to help him and apparently he thought I would feed it to him
He likes being upside-down
Micah's favorite part of the day, the dogs. One dog was quick enough to lick him in the face and he just cracked up
Always loves time with daddy

New Quarter
Tomorrow Cal Poly students will be returning to campus after a week of Spring break. This means our schedules area again up in the air until we find out when students are free to meet. Each quarter things change. And quarters being as short as you are, it seems like you have just adjusted to your schedule when it ends and you have to do it all over again. But on the plus side, if your schedule isn't a good one, you know it will be over soon. Last quarter almost all the guys Tom meet with could only meet on Monday.
Monday's are usually our break after weekend trips with students, or trainings. Most weekends are full one way or another. So besides trying to get some rest, unpacking, laundry, and groceries Monday is also generally our admin day. Printing, inputting, sending reports, all the behind the scenes stuff you don't thing about or see. But this past quarter Tom was trying to meet with these men too. It made it rather a stressful day. But tomorrow is a new quarter, already Tom has nailed down some times with some of the guys he meets with on a weekly basis and it already looks better than last quarter.
I've been reviewing my schedule again, always trying to be mindful of not over committing. I think I realized last quarter that I was thinking of myself as a stay-at-home mom since Micah is always with me. I wasn't looking at the fact that while he is always with me, I am also training, meeting with girls, attending student gatherings, admin, traveling for all our trainings and regional stuff. So yes, I am a stay-at-home mom but I am also a full time working mom too. I think I too often forget to give myself grace in that.
It has been a huge blessing to be able to have Micah with me and work. I love getting to see him every day, to see all the small changes, and not miss anything. And I enjoy the working part, getting to know the students, assist Tom and other staff with different admin things. I just have to remember that I am doing two jobs and to allow myself time for rest.
If you are on our Prayer and Support page on facebook then you received my message about what our staff has/is praying for for 40 days. As I have been praying about it, I have been looking ahead to next year. The woman I currently am meeting with is a senior, she will be leaving, and with Micah, I get to meet a lot of the students but not really spend a lot of relational time with them in their homes and with their friends. I don't know what next year looks like. I have talked to God, and wondered aloud, is my ministry moving more towards other moms? Or is it perhaps our two Edge girls on our staff team. Or will God work in a way that I cannot see at this point to bring me in contact with students? I don't know what this quarter holds, I don't know what the summer will bring and I don't know what next year will look like. To often I try to figure it out on my own. I want to break that trend, I want to look to God, to wait patiently on Him and His plan.
My friend I were reading a passage and we were struck by the fact that the word wait and rest were interchangeable. In one translation it said one, in another, the other. When I think of waiting, I think of lines, of stress. But God wants to show us that when we wait on Him, it's not stressful, we know that the wait will be just as long as it should be, that what He does and has planned will be just as it should be. It will be perfect. We can rest in our waiting because we have a Father we can trust in.
Pray for whoever He chooses to bring into my life (or who are already here). That I will see those people and love them well. Pray for me to wait, to rest, to trust in God.

Nap on Mom
Today Tom watched Micah for 2 hours so I could get out of the house alone and spend some time studying. Apparently Micah screamed most of the time I was gone, not sure if he's not getting enough to eat or was unhappy that I was gone. Once I got home he was still a bit fussy so I nursed him and he is now passed out in my lap. It's funny being a mom, on the one hand I would love to go out without guilt and enjoy some me time but it's also nice to know that someone loves you so much. When he's not in the right mood and someone comes to close or holds him the bottom lip pops out. It's heartbreakingly cute. I'm torn with "dude, please let someone else hold you awhile!" and "oh my poor baby, mama is going to hold you and never let you go!"
At least I got some studying done. This quarter I will be traveling for the regional studies again, Micah in tow. Keeping up with the studies has been difficult, I have yet to finish one but luckily everyone is pretty understanding.
The other week Micah had his 4 month check up. Micah was not in a happy mood, it was right around the time to feed and nap. I wanted to wait to nurse until after his shots and he fell asleep in the car so I had to wake him up. The first thing they have you do is undress them so they can weigh them. Immediately Micah started screaming. I put him on the scale and he flailed about. I'm not sure how accurate the scale was because of this. I'm thinking it must be off some because otherwise he gained less then a pound in 2 months! He dropped from 75% for his age in weight to 20%. The doctor told me not to worry but of course I have been. I help Micah while the doctor examined him and he was fairly happy until I had to put him back on the table for shots. He started crying right away and then when she gave him the shots he did the silent scream, tears streaming out and his head turned bright red :( poor guy. Once I nursed him he was happy again. I have to say I don't like shots, I know they are good for them but its so sad to see and then for two days after Micah runs a mild fever and is so grumpy. My happy baby is back now, so I am glad but not looking forward to those next shots.
The doctor also said we could start some rice cereal and then veggies in a few weeks. I wasn't sure what Micah would think of it, I tried him in the high chair first but it doesn't recline and he was more interested in the new seat and sitting up then on eating.
I moved him to the bouncer and he ate the whole bowl! I had heard that babies make big messes when they start eating, but besides some on his face the rest he inhaled.
I'm glad he is liking it, I am so worried about his weight dropping so much, I think it was a number of factors, one is he is so active, he is always moving when he is awake. The other is he had a cold and I don't think he ate as much during that so I think it caused my production to drop. I started pumping hoping to help. Though I still haven't decided how long I'm going to nurse yet. I was just happy to make it through the first month, and here I am at 4, so who knows.
He's so funny though, he opens his mouth wide and grabs my hand with both of his and tries to shove it in his mouth. He gets mad when I'm too slow. It's been a fun experience so far, looking forward to starting some veggies.
Micah also loves blowing raspberries but lately he is doing it just with his lips, he thinks it's hilarious and so do we! What a cutie!
On the Nav side of stuff, we leave Thursday for some regional training and a marriage retreat. I'm looking forward to seeing everyone and also some other moms. Micah has been a champ at the Gathering, the students love seeing him. I'm currently trying to move his bedtime back to 8:30, right now it's in the middle of the Gathering which has been a little tough.
The little one is stirring... trying to lick my arm actually ;) time to make everyone dinner!

Sew Fun Ramblings
Last Christmas I received a sewing machine. Being of a shorter stature finding pants in the correct length is impossible. I decided instead of paying someone or just rolling up my pants (what I do more of the time), I can hem them. Between my mom and a friend I learned how to thread my needle and a few basics. Then I spent some time practicing and even hemmed a few pants. I must say, knitting seems so much easier! Doing things in straight lines is not very easy for me, and I'm a perfectionist, not a good combo.
I keep seeing friends and projects online and really want to learn though. I love making homemade gifts for people and have loved knitting things for Micah and myself. I have heard of mini quilts that parents make of their child's clothes and I really want to make one for Micah. I feel so intimidated by it though. It doesn't seem to come naturally to me at all. And I don't want to spend a lot of time or money on fabric on something that may be hideous when completed.
I picked up a quilting for beginners from the library and have been reading, it all sounds easy but I know actually doing it will be a whole other story. I have kept some of my favorites of Micah's clothes, the rest passing on to another mom. But I wonder if I should wait on cutting up Micah's clothes, what if we have another boy? Won't I want to use the clothes again? But I'm eager to start a sewing project. I probably should start with something smaller, but what? Does anyone know of a good sewing website with free patterns?
The last few years I have started doing more crafty things. Mostly I have always wanted to, just never brave enough to start. With some friends encouragement and help I got really into knitting. I love being able to make special things for friends and being on a budget it helped immensely with all the baby showers I have had the past year. It's been especially fun for baby showers as I have gotten to pray for the baby as I made them a hat, booties and/or blanket. Another reason I would love to get into sewing, to make special gifts for family and friends.
Maybe I will start by quilting a little burp cloth for Micah out of some scrap fabrics I have. Right now he has boring white diapers for burp clothes, maybe I will use one of those for the backer.... now I'm getting excited! Maybe this weekend I will pull out the sewing machine!

Trusting the Ultimate Planner
Tonight at the Gathering we talked about Trust, what do you trust in? Who do you trust? Why do you trust these things? And why is it hard for you to trust God? It was really cool as different people spoke honestly about what was difficult for them. Some of us are more worried about others opinions, some of us don't believe God will come through. For me one of the reasons I find it difficult to trust God is I think I know best.
For me, I am a planner, an organizer. My spiritual gift is administration. I enjoy planning and scheduling events to make the most of the day. When we load up the car, I'm the one who shuffles the luggage making it all fit like a game of tetris. I trust my skills in that. When God doesn't start fitting the pieces together as I think they should I start doubting. Doesn't He know it would work best if this or that happened? But where my doubt is the greatest so also is my confidence. When I believe that God has a much bigger plan then me, that He is working it all together for His greater good, well my admin side feels better.
I like knowing that God is a planner like me. People who fly by the seat of their pants stress me out. Now don't get me wrong, I can flex my schedule but I think usually my ability to do this is I plan for EVERY situation I can think of. In my mind, I imagine all the different ways things can turn out, I plan what I would do. But the thing with God is, He is tricky. He creates situations even my wild imagination never fathomed. So I sway between panic "does He really know what He is doing? He should just do it my way!" to complete confidence in my Heavenly Father "He really knows what He is doing and how it will all work out".
God continues to remind me that I cannot plan for every situation. My mind, my ideas are not big enough. I have had situations where I just knew there was no way it could end well, then I come out the other side not only unscathed but seeing amazing miracles. Like a movie character after a huge adventure, I pat myself down, looking for wounds and turn back looking at everything that happened and just shake my head in amazement at how it all worked out so perfectly.
This was the second Gathering back this quarter. Micah's second ever. He did pretty good, a little fussy but then ended up napping through most of it. It's at an awkward time for him. Micah still is not on a sleeping schedule. I feel completely incompetent on putting him on one. Forcing him to stay awake when he is clearly exhausted seems mean and trying to put him down when he's ready to play is just impossible. I try to put him down for bed around the same time but other then that, he rules the show. Some days he naps for only 30 minutes no matter what I do and then other days he will suddenly nap for 2 hours! Sometimes he is ready for bed at 7:30, sometimes he falls asleep at 6 (what to do with that!?! Consider it a nap? Or should it be bedtime? AHH, I just don't know!). So I'm trying to be somewhat consistent and hope eventually he will fall into a routine.
Tonight was also fun as my brother, cousin and my parents current exchange student from Germany came. My cousin has talked about coming for a bit and then my brother figured he might as well come check it out too. It was fun to see them. One of the big things I miss about working for the family business is getting to see my family all the time.
After the Gathering some of the group headed down to a local pizza place that has Tuesday Night Trivia. We did it a lot last year, was a good way to hang out and get to know people more. With Micah I won't be going but Tom still plans to. Right now I plan on sitting back, enjoying this rare peace and quite :)

Baby and Books
Since Micah arrived my mind has been constantly focused on him. I love watching him grow, his smiles cheer me up no matter my mood, it's a joy to be with him. For Christmas I received a Kindle, between baby and digital books I could almost be content to disappear from all society.... almost. I decided to ask for a kindle because I thought it would be nice to be able to read on handed while nursing and when Micah's older to read as he plays at the park and such. I didn't realize how cool the kindles are.
The down sides was I knew I would still have to read real books occasionally, there is no replacing the smell and feel of a book in your hand. Also all the new books I looked at were so expensive for just a digital copy! Once I received my kindle I decided to see if there were any free books. There are TONS of free books! Mostly classics which is what I have been reading lately anyway! And the ESV of the bible. Well since Christmas I have already reread Little Women, Alice in Wonderland and just started Sherlock Holmes. In the meantime I was in the middle of reading the Lord of the Rings and am currently in The Return of the King. Yes I am a book-a-holic.
I hope Micah likes books as I do. I love sharing books with friends, talking about what was good and discussing the characters and such. I had taken a bit of a break from reading. I had picked up knitting and one thing that I like more about knitting is I'm producing something. Whether it's a gift or something for my immediate family, it's making something I don't need to buy. Reading really only benefits myself.
I hope to one day join or start a knitting group. That's the problem with knitting is you get bored if that's all your doing. I generally watch TV but chatting with friends would be much more enjoyable. If only I was talented enough to read and knit at the same time. Oh well.
Today, besides reading, I took Micah to the doctor. He's been fighting a cold and since it's his first one and I have some friends who's baby has RSV, I was the over concerned parent and called the doctor. The Doctor did prescribe an inhaler because his something wasn't something.... basically he was a bit raspy so they wanted to prescribe this asthma stuff just to help those open up so he can breath easier. Nothing serious but just keep an eye on it.
It's so hard seeing your little baby sick. Though Micah is still giving out smiles. He is a happy baby but just a little more fussy with this cold. When we put him down last night, he kept waking up since he couldn't breath out of his nose and suck his thumb. He seems to be feeling a little better now so hopefully tonight isn't so bad.
We have a full week this week including traveling 1 1/2 hours to a regional bible study and Tom leaving for the weekend. Our region is having a "Preview" for students who might be interested in working with the Navigators for a year or two. We will be traveling every other weekend for awhile for different Nav events and February is already looking like a crazy month!
"Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own." Matthew 6:34
Just was reminded of this verse, very difficult for me to do. Definitely something I have and need to continue to pray about. I'm a planner/administrator type, I like having everything figured out. Though I am able to rest some in the fact that God is also a planner and He has it planned out much better than I ever could. Just need to keep remembering that!

First Week
This was Cal Poly's first week back. This quarter Micah and I are going to be attending the Gathering (our weekly, large group gathering) and got to attend the first one on Tuesday. It felt great to be back with the students and fun to see some new faces. Micah and also meet up with one of the girls I met with occasionally last year, it was good to catch up and look forward to spending more time with her.
Keep me in your prayers as I try to discern where to step in to ministry and where to step back and be a mom. Pray for God's guidance in that and also for the students and staff as we live life together.

New Years Resolutions?
I don't recall ever having a New Years resolution, besides maybe thinking for a day that "maybe I will have a New Years resolution this year and it will be___" and by the next day I have already forgotten. I feel like throughout the year I try to improve myself already. For me it would just be another way to procrastinate, I would wait for the New Year to create a resolution instead of working on improving myself (mind or body) at that time. Though I don't think any less of people who do it, if it works I think it's great!
I saw a blog where instead of looking at all they wanted to do for the New Year, instead took time to look at all they achieved last year. I really like that. It also seems like a really cool tradition to do with your kids instead of having them create a resolution. A great way to remember what we achieved and also what God did for us over the past year. I love to journal when I have time with God, it helps keep me focused, slows me down to really think about things and it's always neat to go back later and to remember what I had learned and to see prayers that were later answered.
So a few highlights from this last year
The rest of the year has been a blur but wonderful as we have been learning to be parents and still husband and wife and individuals. So many highlights and firsts!
My only regrets or disappointments was missing some good friends weddings. They were in August and early September and the doctor just wasn't comfortable with me traveling to far that late in the pregnancy. I wish I could have been at those events but it just wasn't so.
I still can't believe how much life has changed in one year. This time last year I didn't even know I was pregnant yet, and here I am with an almost 4 month old. Looking through pictures from last year I am reminded of all the wonderful family and friends I am blessed to be surrounded by, the wonderful place I get to live and the amazing job I have. There is hard things in all of it, and loving people is always hard as you hurt with them but the joys are so much greater then the pain.
Thank you Lord for such an amazing year! I'm excited to see what you do in 2011!

Can't We All Just Get Along?
I'm not a huge newspaper reader, every once in awhile I log onto our local newspaper website and will read the articles and different comments posted by other people in my area. I'm so often shocked at the hate and anger spewed on there. People become so mad when others don't agree with them. It makes me so sad! In schools I feel like we should learn how to debate (not yell, debate!). I know very few people who can have a conversation with another person on a topic they disagree on without getting mad. And often these conversations are nothing more then each party stating why they believe something without listening to the other person.
Whether it's religion, politics, where the town is going to spend it's money, to what is the right punishment for different crimes. It doesn't matter. Usually after reading the paper a few times I avoid it for awhile. It makes me so sad we don't know how to get along. That people are so intolerant of people that don't agree with them. The blessing in our country is at least we don't kill others that disagree. But we do yell, mock, name call and hate each other.
And don't get me wrong, I am by no means above this. I try and hope to be but when I see people twisting the facts and name calling on something I believe in, I get mad. I also get mad when people who have similar believes as me do the same. Why does no one know how to fact check? We hear something once, from a celebrity generally and we think it's fact. We rarely check sources, read up on topics. Before I speak, I try to check my facts, "did I hear this from a reliable source? Or was this just gossip or just how I 'feel'?"
It makes me mad to and wonder, why are our schools not teaching us this? In schools they just teach how to memorize; instead they should be teaching us how to search for facts and learn on our own. Some of the smartest people I know did poorly in school because they don't learn well by just having facts jammed into their heads. They require actual learning.
When I was in Junior High I started doing poorly in math, it had previously been one of my best subjects. After the teacher told my mom she didn't have time to teach me, my mom found me a tutor. I loved my tutor! She didn't just say 6 times 6 is 36 and expect me to just parrot back the facts, she showed my why. She used blocks, games and all sorts of different mediums to see how and why those "facts" are true. I wish my school did that more. I feel like schools are not teaching us how to learn but just how to memorize. That's not learning, a parrot can repeat back random facts. But when you actually LEARN something, now that is something neat.
"if you truly think Christians are as stupid as you say then why would you mock them and say so? Do you degrade a mentally challenge person to their face? Or mock a child for believing in Santa? No, so if you truly believe that they are "morons" then you are really heartless to be such a jerk to those people. Personally I don't think that Christians are dumb, just because someone disagrees with me doesn't make them stupid, I too am still learning, I don't know everything. And personally I fear people like you and where you are leading our country with your hate and lack of tolerance. It seems like (from your posts) that anyone who doesn't agree with your opinions is a "moron" (does that mean you know everything?). I'm sorry you dislike everyone who disagrees with you. Must be an angry, sad way to live."
The above was a response to multiple posts by a man who every time called someone a moron when they didn't agree or understand what he was saying. It makes me sad that we name call instead of trying to teach one another. And if we did believe that someone was stupid then we shouldn't name call but slow down and help them learn!
I wish people would have more tolerance for one another. Both Christians and non Christians. We as Christians need to remember God's word is powerful, we don't need to force it on others because God's word is powerful in itself. We need to encourage others to read it and see for themselves. To read it and learn, to ask questions; yes, ask God questions about things. If they truly seek then they will learn who God is, and not just memorize what others have said.
I will come across a passage that I don't understand, or remember something I "learned" (memorized) in Sunday school. Do I believe this? If I do, why do I? How does this fit into what I know about God? I start talking to God about it, I read up on it, read cross sources, read commentaries on it, discuss it with others and when I come out the other end, after I have learned about that passage, I understand and I remember for myself. Then if someone asks me about it, I'm not just parroting and answer, I truly have learned about it and have reasons for my beliefs. But I need to have grace with others, I went through a process to learn that. Hearing it from someone wasn't enough, I had to go learn it for myself and I need to have the patience and grace to allow others to learn it for themselves as well.
I hope what I am saying makes sense. Again, I am far from where I wish to be on this. My emotions often rise quickly and respond quicker then my logic. I still need to learn to take a deep breath and realize that whoever I am speaking to is a human being. They have the beliefs they do because of the narrative of their lives. Yelling, name calling, being mean is not going to help at all. Instead we need to all try to calm down and have a real honest conversation where we share our ideas but more importantly LISTEN! When someone listens to me, like a friend who listens to me vent or share, I feel like they care, that they aren't judging me but honestly listening. It makes me desire to hear from them as well. I know this isn't always the case, but we are called to love others, to help them feel loved. Listening is an amazing way to start.

Last Year I Became a Mom
2011, so weird! This time last year, I didn't even realize I was pregnant yet and now I already have a 3 month old baby! What a change from last year. When I discovered I was pregnant, 9 months didn't seem like long enough to fully wrap my head around it. I still can't believe I'm a mom. I still feel so young, I feel like I need to make sure people see my wedding ring so they know I'm not a pregnant High School girl. I have always looked young for my age.
Being a mom is such a change. When Tom and I first got married we talked about how marriage makes you realize how self centered you are. Changing your living from "me" to "we". I saw movies with people who felt chained down by marriage and I thought that was so odd. And not that I feel chained down, I love my husband and love being married, but once married I realized if I want to up and move to Texas I can't just do that. I now have someone who I have to discuss it with and decide together. My pay check cannot be spend exactly how I want, it's a joint decision, same for my husband. It has been a growing experience and sometimes it's hard but I have enjoyed living for something more then just myself. Cooking for one just wasn't so enjoyable. Decorating the house for Christmas wasn't so exciting without someone else to enjoy it with.
As I entered into motherhood I was reminded again how self centered I can be. With my husband there would be maybe one or two things a day that I would need to choose to be selfless or selfish, with a baby it happens every minute. Those first few weeks every two hours, I fed, I burped, I changed diapers, I put baby to sleep and if I was able to put him to sleep without holding him then I had general self and house upkeep. Feeding, cleaning, dishes, laundry. And before finishing those it's been two hours and you start again. I think I said "your hungry again?!?!" more times those first two weeks.
There were times I loved it, snuggling and caring for this child but there were other times I just wanted a good nights sleep and to rest and heal from giving birth. Even in that though I felt how blessed I was, a husband who willingly helped in cleaning, cooking, diapers, whatever he could do, church friends who brought meals and my mom who came and stayed some days. It made me really admire those women who have to do it alone.
Now as Micah is approaching 4 months I see how much easier it has become. That first month, he didn't mind who it was providing for his needs as long as someone did it. Slowly he started smiling, acknowledging me and my husband and now clearly prefers us over strangers. At first no cuddling or kisses would cheer him up, only food or a diaper. Now when he is upset I just pick him up or even just talk to him and he starts to smile through the tears. It feels good to be needed, to see your attempts succeeding. I love that I am starting to be able to discern Micah's cries. That I can cheer him up, that I know how to make him smile.
I don't really have a point to all this. But I guess for me I found the beginning of motherhood very hard, the healing, how even people helping really cannot do it all, breastfeeding obviously being the main thing but even more then that as a mom I no longer am able to stop thinking or worrying about Micah. It's an odd thing to have your thoughts more focused on another. When we go out, I think more about how Micah looks, if he's warm enough, etc and often forget to change my spit up covered shirt. Someone asks how I am doing and I tell them about Micah. I had heard having a child changes your life but I don't thing you cannot fully understand what that means until it happens. I know I didn't. Now when someone asks me how I am doing, I tell them about Micah, if he had a bad night, so did I. When they complement him on something it's like I have been complimented. My life has changed, I am no longer just a women or a wife. I am a mother. And though it is often hard and scary, I have to say every day I fall more and more in love with Micah.

Food
Food is a passion of mine, what can I say, I come from a family where we planned our days around our meals. When dinner is ready, I am ready, none of this waiting around finishing other tasks, they will be there when you finish. When I moved out for college, I started to cook on my own more. Previously I would help my mom, she would instruct me. Mostly my jobs involved cutting and stirring. But once on my own I had to do it myself. And once I married Tom I cooked even more. I have discovered cooking for one is hard and not very fun. I like having someone to enjoy the food with.
I'm grateful to have a husband who likes many different foods. I sometimes get a look when I tell him what something is but he is always willing to try and sometimes comes out of it enjoying something he never thought he would. Like today...
My parents help support our ministry by giving us groceries from time to time. Yesterday when my mom came to watch Micah so Tom and I could have a much needed date night (well date afternoon), she brought groceries. It's a bit like Christmas morning, I'm not sure what she will bring. She will ask me what I need and so she does bring that but often she will pick up other things, fruit that's in season or items that she is also getting for herself. Yesterday it was radishes.
Now as a kid I enjoyed radishes raw dipped in ranch or some other sauce. I was a weird kid, I liked green onions the same way. Today I decided to slice some up and throw them in my salad but that still left me with a ton. What do you do with radishes? When I have extra ingredients or just looking for something good to make I tend to go to one of my favorite websites tastespotting.com or, if that proves unsuccessful foodgawker.com
A friend of ours told me about it, he told us he wanted to make us dinner and he made us salmon ravioli's. I'm not a huge fan of salmon but I loved that he used wonton wrappers for the raviolis. He told me it wasn't his idea but he had seen it on tastespotting. Ever since I have drooled as I looked at the different recipes, people sure are talented!
Anyways back to today, I searched radishes and found that in France they eat sliced radishes on bread. I found many variations including making herbed butter and a salad with pan seared radishes. I combined the two and was presently surprised. Tom gave me one of those looks when I offered him a bite and told him that it was radishes but he did enjoy it. I doubt I will go out of my way to get radishes but if I get some thats definitely something to do. Next time I think I will do the salad with pan seared radishes and avocado. That looked pretty yummy.
While I was on tastespotting I also did some searching for sweets. It's almost Christmas again, I want to show my loved ones that I care but often the gifts I want to get them are just out of our price range. When I make something homemade I feel like I am doing more, taking more time then just going out and buying some gift. I'm one of those people that have to find the perfect gift. And become frustrated if I can't. Last year I started early and knitting a lot of gifts but this year with Micah I have not had much time. And really how many scarfs do people need? I am currently only knitting one large gift for Christmas, if I finish it early I might make some other small gifts for other people but we will see.
Right now for Christmas sweets I am thinking candied orange peels (some friends brought over oranges from their parents trees yesterday yum!), hot fudge, peppermint bark and perhaps caramel bark. We will see what I end up getting to.
Friday Tom leaves for a whole week which has me both sad since I will miss him and fairly anxious. The longest it has been just me and Micah was only a two night trip. Tom is much better at putting him down to sleep so this will be interesting. When Tom gets back, he will have one day to rest then we will go to his parents for almost a week. Hoping I can hang in there until Christmas! Still need to finish Christmas shopping. It's surprising how much longer everything takes with a little one!
Baby News:
Micah is still growing like crazy, he is so big! He smiles all the time and loves when we sing to him, he enjoys looking in your eyes and "talking". He has discovered his feet a few times, but not so much his hands. I think whenever he remembers his hands he wants to just shove them in his mouth. He is able to get his thumb in his mouth but he is better at getting his pointer finger in. Nights are getting a little easier but I still look forward to the day that I can enjoy a full nights sleep. His current favorite songs are Joy to the World and You are My Sunshine. I'm falling more in love with him every day :)
Cal Poly News:
This week is finials, I can't believe it's already the end of the quarter! We had the Christmas party last week and Micah went to it. It was his first student event. We had an ugly sweater contest, cookie decorating and white elephant. It was a blast! I'm looking forward to next quarter, Micah are getting into a grove and we plan to jump into more activities in January. Excited to get back with the group. There has been a ton of new students which is awesome but I haven't meet most of them. It will be nice to be back out there some.
Prayers:
-Tom and two of our staff girls are traveling to Colorado Springs for a training summit. Prayer for their safe travels and for Micah and I being home without dad.
-Pray for the students during their finials week and as they return home for the holidays
-Pray that we all remember what Christmas is about and that this Christmas we get to enjoy quality time with God and get to know Him more intimately

Cleaning house
Between baby stuff and now Christmas decorations my house seems so cluttered. Today I started to go through everything again to find stuff to get rid of. I'm starting with my clothes. I'm such a pack rat, I found a pair of pants that i have had since Junior High. Here is the arguments that occurred in my head:
A: these have got to go
B: I can't get rid of them!
A: yea but they are SO ugly!
but they are so comfy!
A: You own comfy pants that are also cute, why do you need ugly, old pants
B: ... I dunno, but they are SO comfy!
A: when is the last time you wore them?
B: ...fine
I have my two personalities duling it out. The one personality likes stuff clean, the idea of keeping stuff that has no purpose is dumb. But my other side is the pack rat, what if I might need it again? Why buy something new when I could just keep this and use it? It's a constant battle. Now that Micah is here my pack rat side is losing out. Just to much clutter. Finding time to pick up is hard, easier if there is less to pick up! Now just hoping I find the time to clean out my house before the pack rat finds a way back in!

Motherhood
September 14 at 4:30 am Micah James Nelson was born! Our official due date was September 15, our 3 year wedding anniversary. At our ultrasound I had asked if our due date changed and for his measurement they actually had it on the 14 but still said the 15 since it's all a guess. And yesterday I realized that his daddy was also born on the 14, though in February.

What an adventure, trail, challenge and joy. There are so many words that could describe these past 2 1/2 weeks. Giving birth was the most intense thing I have ever gone through, I'm still amazed at what my body was able to do. I still can't believe I'm a mom. Sometimes I will be doing something and forget, when I do remember I feel a sense of panic, where is he? is he ok? Though usually he calls my attention back before that.
The first week and 1/2 were super hard, I knew this time would be as I'm awful when I don't get enough sleep. But that first bit was even harder since for some reason I never thought about the healing that I would need to go through as well. Now I am feeling so much better physically (aside from lack of sleep) and I think that has made it easier. Micah is also occasionally sleeping for 4 hours at night which means up to 3 1/2 hour chunk of sleep for mommy and daddy! For those of you who don't have kids, the first week or two (and still the occasional night) it's more like an hour and a half if that. It's still hard to believe he is ours! He is just so wonderful, and it's so funny, he keeps me up at all hours of the night, poops and pees on me and is always was ready and demanding to eat when I am starving. And yet I love this little guy, seeing his sweet face makes me so happy!
Cal Poly started back on the 20, Tom slowly transitioned back in and last week was back to his normal schedule. He is so happy to be back with the students but it has been hard for him to leave Micah, he keeps his cell on him at all times and often will check in with me for updates. It's so amazing to see my husband now a father, and what a blessing he has been, I can't imagine doing this without him!
Tom said at the first Gathering (our weekly large group bible study with students) there was a lot of new faces and most came back the second week with more! It's exciting, it's also a bit hard for me since I don't get to be a part of it all. I'm learning there are many joys with motherhood but lots of things you end up feeling "left out" of. This past week Micah and I did do a few staff and training things. This next week we will be doing the same. I'm trying my best not to jump into to many things, though it's hard to slow down and allow others to help and to ask for help. This year is our second year of training and our study we are going through requires 10+ hours of study a week which means my training will be a large part of what my time is focused on this year. That and learning how to be a good mom and also what it means to be a parent and married.
This month, Tom will be traveling for our staff regional bible study for one night and then the Road Rally for two nights. The Road Rally is a weekend where staff and students drive up and volunteer to help clean, paint and serve in the neighborhood for Shoulder to Shoulder, here is a link for what they are all about http://www.navigators.org/us/support/projects/shoulder-to-shoulder Tom went last year to the Road Rally and had an amazing time, he is so excited to go again this year. We have already had more interest from students for this year which is great. With the quarter school the Fall quarter seems to be the toughest on students as they adjust to the quarter system and are often not very available until Winter quarter when they start getting it down.
Please be praying for Tom and I as we continue to adjust to parenthood and ministry. And for rest, especially for rest :P

New Edge
Yesterday we spent the morning helping one of our new Edge staff girls move in. For those of you who don't know Edge is a part of the Navigators. It's a way for recent college graduates to give 1-2 years of their time after college to spread God's word. Edge students receive training and provide aid to already running ministries. After their 1-2 years they continue on into a normal career. Tom and I are technically Edge, we joined the Navigators in this way for the training. While for most Edge is only a 1-2 year commitment with the Navigators, Tom and me plan on staying on with the Navigators indefinitely until God leads us out of it.
This year we will have two Edge staff girls. We are so excited about them, they both came to visit before summer and we think their personalities will be great! The first year of Edge is always hard, like any job you are coming into someone else's vision. There are things you have to do that you don't understand, things that you would do differently (and someday might do that way). A new bunch of coworkers. The first quarter seems to be the hardest, school starts and you hit the ground running.
It's true that "the harvest is plentiful but the laborers are few". Like every ministry it's hard to not let the needs you see around you run you ragged. You start to feel like it's all on you and if it you don't do it, it wont get done. It's not just a job left undone, its a person who is hurting that you might have been able to help. And let's not forget that you are being financially supported by people who don't see your everyday to-do list, you feel an obligation to them to use every second and every dollar wisely. No wonder so many pastors and missionaries get burned out.
It's so easy to forget that it's not about us, how much we can do on our own. It's about God, it's His work. If I run out of time or cannot talk to three people in desperate need at one time, I am not failing them, it's not about me working harder. Perhaps God wanted them to be separated at this hard time, or perhaps with me out of the way someone else will step up and love them. When we forget that we cannot mess up God's work is when we lose sight of who is really in control. In college I was involved in a college ministry, in some ways I think the girl who was meeting with me made some poor choices, I think much of her advice was self motivated. But you know what, that is what caused me to grow. I had no one to turn to but God. I had to seek Him and listen to Him only. I feel like that is the time my relationship with God really started to grow.
Starting this post, I did not plan on going there but God certainly directs. As I am heading into this next year at Cal Poly, I need to remember why I'm here, who sent me and in the end, who's work I am doing. I'm chomping at the bit to get this next year started. I think some really cool things are going to happen, and I have no idea what those will be, it may seem small or not even clear to many but I think God has some cool stuff to show me. I think God has some really sweet stuff planned for our two new Edge girls, I think it will be hard year for them, in many ways I think our staff will fail them and yet it's all in God's control, it will happen the way He wants it.
Please be praying for:
-our new Edge girls that they are open to what God has in store for them this year
-for unity in our staff, that we serve and love each other this year and continue to grow closer
-for the students we will be connecting with, that God brings us together, shows us where we should be reaching in and that their hearts would be open to experiencing God
-for baby Nelson and for me, patience in this time of waiting and for a healthy delivery in God's time

I'm growing a baby, what did you do today?
As of Wednesday I am considered full term. I still can't believe it! Tom has been impatiently waiting for baby to come and his excitement has rubbed off and now I'm feeling equally impatient. I just want the little guy to come! It doesn't help that last week was the end of crazy summer stuff. This week has felt much more relaxed which for me, who enjoys a schedule, has been tough. I still have a long to-do-list but it's all small errands and stuff around the house, things I'm not all that excited about doing. I wish Cal Poly was in, I keep hoping baby will come early because I really don't want to miss the first Gathering and other Navigator stuff. This summer has been so much more busy then we thought but it has been really good. I'm surprised at how much I was able to get done. The baby room is ready and turned out so much better than I thought. I keep going in there and sitting on my glider just enjoying it.
Cal Poly doesn't start until September 20. Tom's weekly guys bible study has still been going great, and he has been meeting one on one with many guys. We also have been working on fund raising. With our need went up and so we have been trying to reach out to new folks, churches and also some people who have already contacted. We have already been blessed by many but still have a ways to go.
While many of the Nav guys stayed in town this summer, not so with most of the girls. Off and on we have had girls around but the last few weeks most have been home to enjoy the last bit of summer. I feel like I have nothing important to do and Tom keeps reminding me that I'm growing a baby, staying healthy, cleaning, and making lunch and dinner most days. Yes I have a full list of things to do but, and maybe it's the pregnancy hormones, I have been feeling a bit down. I'm ready for baby to come, I'm ready (well as ready as one can be) to enter into the next phase of life where I know there will be months of sleep deprivation, dirty diapers and feedings. But I'm ready to start it. I'm ready for Cal Poly to come back and to start this new year. I was doing so good on being patient.... until yesterday! I definitely need prayers in that department. I know baby will come in God's time, but waiting for him is tough! In the meantime I am just here, doing chores.... and growing a baby
